Coffee Beans vs Ground Coffee: What’s The Difference?

Is it better to buy coffee beans or ground coffee? Should you grind your beans at home? Let’s compare to see how they stack up.

When done right, you can brew a delicious cup of coffee from either whole beans or ground coffee. However, they each offer different benefits and drawbacks based on freshness, flavour, convenience and control.

Let’s break down the differences.

Freshness and Flavour

Freshness is where coffee beans really begin to separate themselves from ground coffee. Since beans have had less exposure to air than pre-ground coffee, they contain more of the natural oils and aromatic goodness that lend coffee its flavour. After coffee beans are ground up, they start to oxidise and those precious flavours begin to escape. The result? Coffee brewed with freshly ground beans simply tastes more complex and smells more aromatic.

In short:

Coffee beans stay fresh longer whereas ground coffee loses flavour quickly once the packet is opened. If your main goal is brewing coffee at home that tastes like it came from the café, grinding your beans right before brewing will give you the best results.

Convenience and Daily Routine

If convenience is more your thing, then pre-ground coffee might be the way to go. Ground coffee can be brewed right out of the bag without any additional tools or preparation. All you need is your favourite coffee maker and you’re ready to go.

Whole bean coffee requires a little more effort. You’ll need a grinder to get started, and you’ll have to take that extra step each morning before brewing. While this can be part of the fun for many coffee lovers, others find it a needless inconvenience.

Control and Brew Method

There’s another way that brewing coffee with whole beans can offer more control: the type of grind. If you like to switch things up between different brew methods, having freshly roasted whole beans means you can control the grind type to match your method. Similar to the idea of coarse vs fine ground coffee, different brewing methods work better with different grind sizes.

French press coffee is generally coarse ground, filter drip coffee is generally medium ground and espresso coffee is made with fine ground beans. Pre-ground coffee is typically made with a medium grind size that’s suited for filter coffee makers. If you want to brew your coffee any other way, pre-ground coffee can limit your ability to dial in the perfect flavour.

Storage Life

You’ll also get more life out of whole bean coffee than ground coffee when it comes to storage. Ground coffee has more surface area exposed to oxygen, which means it will go stale faster than beans. If you store ground coffee in an airtight container it will keep for a decent amount of time. However, once you open the packet, ground coffee should be used relatively quickly.

Coffee beans last longer before they go bad, and will keep their flavour for longer after opening when stored properly. If you don’t drink coffee every day, buying whole beans might be the smarter choice.

Whole Coffee Beans vs Ground Coffee: Verdict

As you can see, there are pros and cons to both coffee beans and ground coffee. If freshness, flavour and control are your top priorities, whole beans are the clear winner. If you want coffee that’s quick and easy to brew everyday, pre-ground coffee might be best.
